FUNCTION
Organisation
Full size goal in standard position on the pitch.
Full size goal 5 yards past half way line in central area.
Spare balls near to goal.
Defending team (Blue) 1xGK, 2xCB, 1xRB, 1xLB, 3xCM (One deep lying) Team Formation 4-3-3
Attacking team (Red) 1xLM, 2xCM, 1xRM, 2xCF Team Formation 4-4-2
Ball starts in position A,B or C (indicated by different coloured discs) with the Red Team. Blue team are in positions relevant to defensive shape. Red Team concede possession to Blue Team. Blue Team must pass the ball back to GK. When ball is with GK the Blue team to move into positions ready to play out (as worked on during DRILL - Indicated by red arrows). Blue team play out with objective to score in Red team goal. Red team to prevent this. If they re-gain possession they have 10 seconds to score a goal. Blue team to react to losing possession (original defensive shape).
Scenario 1 - Red Team to let Blue Team have possession. No press, just compact. Can blue team find a way out?
Scenario 2 - Red Team high/aggressive press. What can blue team do differently to scenario 1?
- Blue team react to gaining/losing possession (relevant positions)
- GK support position (relevant to play)
- GK support positon (dictating play) - Play in high position rather than deep.
- GK communication shape (in and out of possession) - Organising defence/team shape

Blue Team - 1xGK, 1xLB, 1xRB, 2xCB, 3xCM (One deep lying), 1xCF Team Formation 4-3-3
Red Team - 1xGK, 2xCB, 1xRM, 1xLM, 2xCM Team Formation 4-4-2
Ball starts with Red team GK who plays the ball off the floor to Blue GK (Following any other stoppages, ball will be played from GK who concedes goal/or from the relevant GK if the team gets goal kick).
Open play with no restrictions.
Change scenario:
1. Blue team 1-0 down. Does this affect their play/Shape?
2. Red team 1-0 down. Does this affect their play/shape?
- Coach points as they happen (relevant to DRILL/FUNCTION session)
- If deep lying MID (Blue) gets the ball to often/easily, change Red formation to 4-3-3

2 x cone goals on half way line in wide area.
Spare balls near to goal.
1xGK, 2xCB, 1xRB, 1xLB, 3xCM (One deep lying) - Team formation 4-3-3
All players set up as indicated.
1. GK starts with ball and will play out from goal kick to LB/RB. LB/RB will play the ball back to GK. GK switches the ball to opposite side (LB/RB) - Repeat 3-4 times each side.
- Minimal touch's being taken (1-2 max ideally) - Do not sacrifice quality/accuracy
- GK support position - Outside line of post. Deep/High. How does GK position affect team shape?
- GK approach to ball - body shape not indicating direction of pass.
- GK distribution (accurate/good technique - work on if required)
2. Repeat the above with ball being played into all players in sequence indicated (1,2,3). Ball returning to GK via CB's
- How does the position of the ball/player in possession affect the rest of the teams shape?
- Are the players reacting/supporting in relevant positions.
- Deep lying MID to start high and drop into position to receive ball. GK to decide on support position. What will affect his decision?
3. GK plays out to any player. Team must get the ball through the cone goals in as few passes as possible. GK must touch the ball twice.
- Support positions (all players)
- Minimal touch's (1 or 2 ideally 3 max)
4. Gradually introduce opposition
- 2 x CF
- 2 x CM
- 1 x LM and 1 x RM
